Last week we designed the syllabus for the four week beginners course in Italian Rapier – we meaning Justin, Robert, and me and last week meaning over beers at the pub after training. The course starts on the 21st of August and we are hoping to get between five and ten people committed to the whole four weeks.

Here is what we came up with.

Each week we will run through a warmup with with:

  • a game (frisbee)
  • ROM (range of movement) stretches for the shoulders, elbows, wrists, hamstrings, groin, glutes, and calves
  • Windsor turns
  • Pyramid stepping

Week 1 – Measure

  • stance as taught by pyramid stepping
  • intro the steps
  • advance retreat pyramid
  • the partner resistance lunge as a gateway to the lunge
  • the guards
  • what is measure
  • intro protective equipment and students don kit
  • maintaining measure drill with the invitation to lunge
  • sport rules intro
  • Last man standing melee game

Week 2 – Pressure

  • the advance retreat pyramid
  • lunge practice
  • footwork kata
  • intro gaining the sword
  • basic drill level 1
  • intro the disengage
  • basic drill level 2
  • students get into kit
  • controlling lines drill
  • maintaing measure drill levels 1-3
  • Last man standing melee game

Week 3 – Tempo

  • Warmup
  • the advance retreat pyramid
  • lunge practice
  • footwork kata
  • intro counterattack in time
  • basic drill levels 1-3
  • intro parry-riposte in two times
  • basic drill 2-4 starting on the inside
  • maintaing measure drill levels 1-3 outside, 1-4 inside
  • last man standing melee game

week 4 – other stuff

  • Warmup
  • the advance retreat pyramid
  • lunge practice
  • footwork kata
  • basic drill 1-4 starting on the inside
  • intro beats
  • basic drill 1-4 starting on the outside
  • Sbasso
  • Scannatura
  • measure drill 1-4
  • intro freeplay
  • freeplay

The idea is to teach a subset of the system that covers most circumstances and incorporates the concepts required for further study in the Capofferro style. The other key aspect of this design is that all the students should work up a sweat at every training session; this should give them an adrenaline hit to encourage them to continue and help build up their physical capacity for later free play.
