I built this kata on the model of Guy’s cutting drill.

  • Advance
  • Advance
  • Lunge ( in 4th other arm behind)
  • Recover
  • Pass back
  • Pass forward
  • Retreat
  • Lunge ( in 2nd other arm forward)
  • Pass forward
  • Pass forward (into guard)
  • Pass changing hands
  • Withdraw (into guard)
  • Repeat

Last night I taught it, in toto, to two total beginners to historical fencing. I taught it using the chunking approach I learned playing the cello.

Here’s how I broke it down:
After running them through the entire thing I had them do the first part on their own.

  • Advance
  • Advance
  • Lunge
  • Recover
  • Repeat

Then the second part.

  • Lunge
  • Recover
  • Pass back
  • Pass forward
  • Repeat

The first and second parts together.

  • Advance
  • Advance
  • Lunge
  • Recover
  • Pass back
  • Pass forward
  • Repeat

Then the third part which was harder.

  • Pass forward
  • Pass forward (into guard)
  • Pass changing hands
  • Repeat

The second and third parts together with the retreat.

  • Pass back
  • Pass forward
  • Retreat
  • Lunge ( in 2nd other arm forward)
  • Pass forward
  • Pass forward (into guard)
  • Pass changing hands
  • Withdraw (into guard)
  • Repeat

And finally had them doing the whole thing on their own without prompting. It worked well but on reflection choosing slightly different second and third parts would be better.
